Vermont Self Employment Assistance Program
Do you want to start a business? Work full time on expanding a business? If so, the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) program may be a good option for you. In order to qualify for SEA you need to be a claimant that has been identified as someone eligible to receive at least 13 weeks of Emergency Unemployment benefits (EUC) before finding permanent work.
The SEA program is an intense program designed to assist individuals with exploring self employment business opportunities.
This program allows individuals who are receiving Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits, to pursue the development of a self employment venture. The proposed business has to be determined feasible by Vermont Department of Labor (VDOL) staff, in consultation with the Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC).
Individuals approved to participate in the SEA program will be required to fully vest themselves in SEA activities and will not be required to conduct weekly work search. SEA program participants may receive up to 13 weeks of Self Employment Allowances, in lieu of EUC benefits.
To be considered for the SEA program, you must apply, be approved for the program by Vermont Department of Labor, and meet the following requirements:
Participation in the SEA program requires significant time investment from the claimant.
If approved for SEA, you can work full time on your business and receive weekly unemployment benefits.
You can take classes or get counseling related to your business. I
ncome from your business will not reduce your unemployment benefits while you are in SEA.
SEA participants are not required to conduct work search.
VDOL will send you a written decision on your SEA application. If you are approved for SEA, you will be provided instructions for filing your weekly claim and other information.
