Research shows that there is a brief window of opportunity to help an individual with a work-limiting injury or illness to remain in the workforce. Once that window closes, the likelihood of an individual remaining employed is low. When an illness or injury forces a worker to exit the labor force, the loss negatively affects the health and well-being of that worker, as well as their family, employer, and the larger community. Statistics show that unemployment can increase the risk of serious mental and physical health conditions.

FACTS FOR PATIENTS
What is VT RETAIN?
VT RETAIN is a free program managed by the State of Vermont that provides support to workers with injuries or illnesses to help them stay at or get back to work as quickly and successfully as possible. Being able to work is essential for living your best life, and many people feel alone and unprepared for being out of work from an injury or illness. We want to help. The VT RETAIN program is looking for people to participate in a study to help us improve our services.
What are the benefits of participating in the VT RETAIN research study?
All study participants receive:
- Expert tips for safely working during an injury or illness
- A library of work-health resources vetted by professionals
- Financial compensation for time spent participating in the study
- Free access via your primary care provider to an Occupational Medicine doctor
Some participants also will receive six months of free work-health coaching services provided by a licensed social worker, registered nurse, or other experienced professional by phone or a mobile health app. You will be notified after you enroll whether or not you will be assigned a Work-Health Coach. Work-health coaching does not replace your treatment plan but provides additional assistance by working with you and your care team to keep your recovery on track by:
- Creating an individualized plan to help you stay at or return to work
- Providing support, guidance, and work-health resources through regular one-on-one check-ins
- Helping you access health, employment, and other services
How do I get started?
The first step is to answer a few screening questions. You can get a screening form from your primary care provider or contact VT RETAIN directly. A RETAIN Coordinator will contact you if you meet screening criteria for the study.
What happens when I enroll in the VT RETAIN study?
If you are eligible and choose to enroll, you will receive an enrollment packet with a consent form, intake survey, and access to our resource library. If you are assigned a Work-Health Coach, you will schedule weekly check-ins with your Coach to ensure your progress is on track. Six months after you enroll, we will ask you to complete an exit survey packet to help us improve the program. You will receive up to $100 for completing the study surveys.
