DEPARTMENT OF LABOR HIGHLIGHTS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR VETERANS DURING NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK
Montpelier, VT – As the nation recognizes service members this Veteran’s Day, The Vermont Department of Labor wishes to highlight the workforce training and education opportunities, and resources available to veterans transitioning from a military to civilian career.
At each of Vermont’s 12 local Career Resource Centers, veterans, and qualifying spouses, are given priority status. Veterans Service Specialists, who are veterans themselves, are made available to provide further information and assistance for veterans looking to take advantage of the opportunities offered at the centers.
One such opportunity is apprenticeships, or on-the-job training programs, which serve as an effective way to prepare veterans for civilian employment. The Vermont Registered Apprenticeship Program links job seekers and employers to provide opportunities for Vermonters to start a new career and gain skills while also earning a living wage.
“We, at the Department of Labor, are committed to serving our veterans and ensuring they are given the resources needed to make a smooth and seamless transition back to civilian life. Apprenticeships give veterans an edge in Vermont’s competitive labor market.” said Commissioner Michael Harrington, “Our programs are designed to ensure that veterans are able to not just find a job after service but seek a career they are passionate about and provide them with meaningful opportunities through training and education to grow within a profession.”
In addition to the financial and tuition resources offered by the Department of Labor, Veterans can use the G.I. Bill benefit in pursuit of opportunities as well. Examples of additional resources available to Veteran applicants include a monthly housing allowance, which is determined based on the duration of training.
The Department of Labor will be hosting its annual Veterans and Community Career Fair on Tuesday, November 19 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Burlington. Special access will be given to veterans at 10:00 a.m., with the doors open to the public from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
