About Registered Apprenticeship

What is the Registered Apprenticeship Program?

The Registered Apprenticeship Program is an occupational training program designed to provide individuals with hands-on experience and on-the-job training in the specific industry of their choosing. The program is administered by Vermont Department of Labor's Workforce Development Division.  Registered Apprenticeship offers a combination of classroom training, on-the-job mentoring and practical work experience, allowing participants to earn a wage while they learn. As apprentices progress through the program, they earn industry-recognized credentials and gain valuable skills that can help lead to long-term career success.

Registered Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, construction, and technology.

This program differs from other training programs in several ways:

  • Paid Job - These are jobs! Registered Apprentices earn progressive wage as skills and productivity increase.
  • Industry Led – Programs start at the business level, but may also be designed and offered with an industry, across businesses.  Programs align with industry standards to make sure that apprentices are trained for the highly-skilled, in-demand occupations they are interested in.
  • Mentorship - The program provides structured training, including instruction from an experienced mentor, to prepare the apprentice for a successful career.  State law specifies a ratio of journey-worker to apprentices to ensure safety of apprentices as they learn.
  • Supplemental Education - Apprentices are provided with classroom education based on the employers unique training needs to ensure quality and success
  • Diversity - Programs are built to reflect the communities in which they operate. Non-discrimination, anti-harassment, and recruitment practices focused on access, equity, and inclusion are all important parts of the Registered Apprenticeship program.
  • Quality and Safety - Apprentices are afforded worker protections during their training so they are not only skilled, but safe.
  • Credentials - Apprentices earn a portable, nationally-recognized credential issued by the registering agency, the Vermont Department of Labor.
