Statement from Commissioner Harrington for Labor Day

September 1, 2023

Montpelier, Vt. – Commissioner Michael Harrington offers the following statement ahead of Labor Day:

"Labor Day is more than just a day off – it's a time to honor the hard work of everyone who plays a part in keeping Vermont's economy strong. The dedication of each person makes Vermont the thriving and lively community we all love.

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Recent months have shown Vermonter’s resiliency. Since the July 2023 flood, our workers and business owners have faced unprecedented challenges. Still, we stand together as a strong Vermont community.

The Vermont Department of Labor and Vermont employers will continue to work side-by-side to ensure that everyone in Vermont experiences safe workplaces, fair pay, and equal employment opportunities.

If you're seeking help with employment or training, don't hesitate to visit your local job center. Our team is excited to assist you in reaching your full potential, making connections to local opportunities and resources.
